The facial nerve innervates the muscles that control facial movement and expression.  The facial muscles are import to the proper closure of you eyelids to protect agains injury to the cornea of your eyes, closure and movements of your mouth and lips that are essential to speaking clearly and to hold food in you mouth while chewing, and to prevent drooling while drinking. If the facial nerve is damaged through injury or disease; fails to develop; or is removed by surgery for tumors some or all of the function of the facial muscles will be lost.
