Diet and exercise can help make you healthy, as well as help you look lean and muscular. For most individuals however, it does not remove stubborn localized fat deposits (LFD’s). Every individual’s fat distribution and body shape is genetically determined and hormonally influenced. What this means is that often no amount of diet and exercise will remove those stubborn deposits of fat. Even if the individual is at an appropriate body weight, they will still possess areas of excess fat.
Liposuction is a procedure that permanently removes fat cells, thus sculpting the body, and doing what diet and exercise alone could not.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes deposits of excess fat from specific areas of the body, face or neck. Liposuction is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States today. Liposuction can be used to slim the hips, thighs, flatten the tummy, shape the calves and ankles, or eliminate a double chin.
Liposuction involves the injection of the areas to be treated with a saline solution containing a numbing medicine and a blood vessel constricting medicine. This solution puffs up the fat, numbs the area and reduces bleeding allowing the gentle removal of the unwanted fat using a special suction cannula (tube) with minimal pain and minimal bruising. Ultrasound Liposuction involves the use of a probe which emits sound waves that emulsify the fat which is then removed by the suction cannula.
Frequently elastic garments are helpful to provide gentle support and compression to the treated areas after liposuction.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, is a procedure in which excess skin and fat are removed from the lower abdomen and the muscles of the abdomen wall are tightened. This procedure can greatly reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. The procedure is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies have stretched their abdomen so that it does not return to its normal shape. A tummy tuck is also helpful for those who have lost a significant amount of weight and now have loose, sagging skin. Tummy tucks are often performed in conjunction with liposuction to reduce the excess fat of the flanks (“love handles”).
The best candidates for an abdominoplasty are men or women in good health and relatively good shape, but who are bothered by hanging loose abdominal skin, and lax abdominal muscles. Those who are considering losing a significant amount of weight, or women still planning future pregnancies, may want to consider waiting before undergoing the tummy tuck procedure. However, some patients benefit from excision of an area of excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen which improves their appearance and allows them to more easily participate in an exercise program to loose weight, and then undergo a full abdominoplasty after they’ve reached their goal.
During the tummy tuck procedure a horizontal incision is made just above the pubic area and excess skin and fat is removed from the abdomen. Skin is separated from the abdominal wall. The underlying muscles of the abdominal wall are then tightened. The abdominal skin is then drawn downward and the excess is removed, and the umbilicus (belly button) is brought out through an incision in the skin.
Some of these risks of tummy tucks include infection, blood clots and loss of the lower edge of the skin flap. Sometimes scarring can be unsightly and may require a second operation.
There are a variety of types of abdominoplasty procedures. A mini-tummy tuck can be performed, in which only improves the appearance of the abdomen below the navel. During a mini-tummy tuck, only a short horizontal incision is made and the skin is separated only between the incision line and the navel. Liposuction can help to further sculpt the contours of your torso and is often performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck. The best choice for you will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Valauri.
Buttock implant augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that provides a solution for those who wish to enhance there back side. Implants placed in the buttocks are comprised of a silicone shell filled with a firm but flexible material, typically silicone. These implants are designed to maintain a natural feel to the buttocks. However, types of implants used may vary.
Buttock augmentation (butt implants), involves the surgical insertion of artificial implants under the skin and fat of the buttocks in order to enhance their size and shape. This surgery is frequently sought by women who are unhappy with the size of their buttocks. Some feel their buttocks lack shape, while others want to have a more sensuous backside by making them larger and rounder.
Thighplasty (Thigh Lift)
A thigh lift is a surgical procedure performed to tighten the loose and sagging skin around the thighs. Many women and men who have experienced large weight loss are often left with excess skin. This redundant skin can be excised tightened and redraped for a smoother, firmer thigh. The procedure can be combined with liposuction for excess skin and fat of the inner thigh, outer thigh and posterior thigh. The scars are usually hidden in a skin crease.
The effects of aging on the skin are familiar to all of us. Over time, the skin changes in four ways: it loses thickness, loses elasticity, loses adherence to the underlying tissue, and is affected by gravity. At the same time, the deep layers of fat, muscle and bone thin as well. The amount of elastic tissue and collagen present in the dermis (the deep layer of the skin) also decreases. One area where these changes are especially apparent is the upper arm. An arm lift can remove and tighten up loose skin in the upper arms, resulting in a firmer, more youthful contour. The principal drawback is that the procedure may result in a visible scar along the inside or back of the arm.
